In shortNobody sells one Machu Picchu and Easter Island tour, so the Peru side and the island side are two separate bookings. In Peru you can take a 14-hour day trip from Cusco at $336 with a local expert guide in Spanish or English, or the 2-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour at $449 with a fluent English-speaking local guide and a night in Aguas Calientes. On Rapa Nui the choice is a 6-hour tour at $70 with guide and transport, or a 13-hour private tour spread over two days at $560 with a driver/guide, which suits travellers who have the time to link Peru and Chile in one trip.

What a Machu Picchu and Easter Island tour really involves
No tour on sale puts Machu Picchu and Easter Island in one booking. The four tours on this page come from different operators working in different countries: two start and finish in Cusco, two run on the island. Rapa Nui, the island's own name, is Chilean territory reached by flights from mainland Chile, so this kind of trip is a Peru segment and a Chile segment that you join together with your own flight dates.
Do Peru first. Cusco stands at 3,399 m while the citadel is at 2,340 m, so the order that works is to land in Cusco, give yourself a couple of nights to adjust, then drop into the Sacred Valley and continue to Machu Picchu. Leave the island for the second half of the trip.
For the days, add the two segments rather than overlapping them. The Peru part needs acclimatisation nights in Cusco plus either one long day or the two-day tour, and the standard routing of Lima to Cusco by air takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, Cusco to Ollantaytambo about 1 hour 30 minutes by road and Ollantaytambo to Machupicchu about 2 hours by train. The island part needs one day for the 6-hour tour or two for the private tour, plus the flights in and out from the Chilean mainland.
Fix the Machu Picchu date before you touch anything else. The entry ticket carries your full name and ID document number and an entry hour printed on it, date and name changes are not allowed, and an unused ticket loses validity with no refund outside documented force majeure. Book the island days around that fixed date.
Which one fits you
Travellers with one free day from Cusco should take the 14-hour day trip at $336. It covers citadel admission, the round-trip train or bimodal bus-and-train service, the shuttle bus to go up and down from Machu Picchu town, a local expert guide in Spanish or English, and pickup and drop-off at your lodging in Cusco.
If 14 hours in a single stretch sounds like too much, the 2-day version at $449 splits the load: the lower Sacred Valley and a buffet lunch on day one, a night in a private room in Aguas Calientes, then the citadel on day two with a fluent English-speaking local guide. Entry is priority allocation for Circuit 2, subject to Ministry availability, so book early.
One day is enough for the island's headline sites when the calendar is tight. The 6-hour Rapa Nui tour at $70 includes guide and transportation and stops at Orongo, Rano Kau, Ana Te Pahu, Puna Pau, Ahu Akivi and Ahu Vinapu; the national park ticket and meals are not part of it.
Anyone who wants to set the pace, ask questions and reach the sites in better light should look at the 2-day private tour at $560. Thirteen hours of touring over two days with a driver/guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water and an air-conditioned minivan, adding Rano Raraku, Ahu Tongariki, Anakena Beach, Ahu Vaihu, Ahu Akahanga and Ahu Tahai. It is not available to cruise ship passengers.
Before you book
- The 2-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour meets steps from your hotel, at a nearby corner or landmark, and at Plaza Regocijo by the central fountain for distant lodgings; the operations team confirms your time and place by WhatsApp at least 72 hours before departure.
- Cancellation terms differ by country. Both Peru tours are final sales with no refund for cancellations; both Rapa Nui tours refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
- The Machu Picchu day trip is worth booking about 60 days ahead because of limited daily capacity; last-minute bookings inside that window are usually midday or afternoon shifts only.
- Machu Picchu entry tickets are nominal: full name and ID document number on the ticket, the entry hour printed on it, and no name or date changes afterwards, so send passport details exactly as written.
- On the 2-day tour, the Sacred Valley Boleto Turistico is paid in Peruvian sol cash at the ruins entrance, and Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain is an option at US$70 cash paid in Cusco.
- On Rapa Nui the national park ticket is excluded from both tours: one ticket per person, valid for all tours and sites, bought online beforehand.
- Meals are largely on you. The 6-hour island tour excludes meals, the private island tour excludes lunch and gratuities, and the Cusco day trip excludes lunch, bottled water and tips.
